The National Archives and the National Library are the two most important national institutions of the country devoted to the cultivation of knowledge and preservation of the country's cultural heritage. The institutions are also the repositories of the country's important historical documents and the nation's creative literary and other works. They work under the guidance of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. The National  Archives and the National Library are located in the most picturesque and historical site at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar of the capital Dhaka. 

1. To ensure official custody and physical safety of the archives of all public offices and to make them available for reference and research.

2. To serve as the central depository of all the records of the Government

3. To acquire and preserve government and private collections.

4. To provide research facilities for the administrators and researchers and the public.

5. Acquisition and preservation of all important  national productions of printed materials in all forms.                                                            

6. Collection of printed materials related to Bangladesh, no matter where it is published, and as a corollary, the acquisition of photographic and electronic records of such material that is not available within the country.

7. Acquisition and conservation of published  materials from abroad as  required by the country.

8. Rendering of bibliographical and documentation services.

9. Functioning as the nation's principal Reference Centre.
